Exeter 6  Avon Old Farms 5 OT
Ashburnham, MA, Wednesday, April 13th - On a brisk spring day, playing at the neutral site of Cushing Academy, the Exeter BIG RED stayed undefeated with a thrilling 6-5 overtime win over a very good Avon Old Farms team. The story of the day was game ball winner Matt Harrigan. Matt was simply outstanding in the nets where he made 20 saves, many of them from close range. Matt also did a good job against a very tough Avon ride that did not allow Exeter to clear it easily. Avon went on top at the beginning by a 2-0 score and dominated the ball for much of the first quarter that ended at 2-1. Exeter did a great job adjusting, and played magnificent lacrosse in the 2nd period. It was Exeter's turn to dominate the ball, and four unanswered goals by four different scorers provided Exeter with a 5-2 advantage at halftime. The 3rd quarter looked a lot like the first with Avon once again controlling the action. They applied tremendous pressure on a tiring Exeter defense, and managed to score three unanswered 3rd period goals to knot the score at 5-5. Both defenses really stiffened in the 4th quarter. The defensive unit of long poles Pat Flynn, Frank Andrews, Coleman Peeke, Brett Hughes, Evan Crosby, and Ian Drummond, was supported by great short stick defensive work on the part of Kirk Bansak and Bruce Hallett. Meanwhile, Matt Harrigan became impenetrable. Exeter's Travis Glennon won the overtime faceoff (he was 7 out of 9 on the day), but we were unable to generate a shot before turning the ball over. Avon cleared the ball, called a timeout, and set up their offensive scheme to score and win the game. Avon showed patience, but long pole Brett Hughes made a huge play by stripping an Avon middie of the ball and his stick, and Exeter gained possession. Mr Reliable, Kirk Bansak, cleared the ball into the Exeter offensive box, and Exeter called timeout to set up a play to win the game. Middie Sam Duprey executed the play perfectly, and fed Jon Higgins for the winning goal. Jon became the sixth different player to score Exeter's sixth goal. It was quite a game, and unfortunate that either team that had played so hard and well had to lose. The season is still young, and there is much work to do to keep improving, but this win should provide some nice momentum as we look ahead. Click here to see game pics
