Exeter 4  Andover 6
Exeter, NH, Saturday, May 28th - For the 2nd year in a row, Exeter's lacrosse team started their game against Andover very poorly and played the remainder of the game trying to recover. Andover outplayed Exeter in all phases of the game for the entire first half and took a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime. Offense, defense, groundballs, goalie play, clearing and riding were all basic parts of the game that were just not played with Exeter's typical high quality. Andover played with more overall intensity and executed a perfect game plan that included ball control through quick passing, and sliding quickly to Exeter's dodgers. When Exeter did generate quality shots, Andover's goalie Sean Aaron made one great save after another. After Andover scored within 30 seconds into the 2nd half to take a 5-0 lead, Exeter finally decided to start playing real lacrosse. Despite picking up their level of play, it took Exeter over 8 minutes into the 3rd quarter before Michael Scalise finally scored Exeter's first goal on a man-up play with the assist from Travis Glennon. Just before the end of the 3rd quarter, Travis assisted Brett Davis, and the lead was cut to 5-2 going into the 4th. The defense of Coleman Peeke, Ian Drummond, Frank Andrews, long pole Brett Hughes, and short stick defenders Kirk Bansak and Bruce Hallett became more aggressive and started forcing turnovers. Within 30 seconds of the start of the 4th quarter, Michael Scalise scored off a beautiful assist from Sam Duprey to make the score 5-3. Exeter now had the momentum, and the Andover goalie was looking somewhat human again. Four minutes later, Travis Glennon made it a one-goal deficit off a Brett Davis assist and with more than 7 minutes remaining in the game, it was either team's ball game to win. Andover still had the lead, and they were trying their best to control the ball and stop Exeter's momentum. With five minutes remaining, an Exeter defenseman slashed an Andover attackman, and Andover converted a long outside shot from just inside the restraining line to move ahead 6-4. Exeter continued to scramble and gain possession of the ball, but once again Andover's goalie Williams closed the lid on the goal by making a few more saves to add to his 20+ save total for the game. When an Exeter shot bounced squarely off the top pipe and into an Andover stick with about 30 seconds remaining, it became clear that the comeback would fall short. Click here to see game pics
