Exeter 12  Tabor Academy 6
Sat, 5/1 Exeter, NH - Exeter played a very solid game on offense, defense, and in transition, to come away with a very convincing 12-6 victory over rival Tabor Academy. Game ball winner Tim Redmond, who tallied five goals and one assist, led the offense. Tim and his attackmates Tom Petty (3 goals) and Eric Horan (2goals, 1 assist) did the majority of the damage to Tabor's defense despite a good game from the Tabor goalkeeper. Tim, Tom, and Eric each scored once in the first quarter as Exeter took a 3-2 lead. During the 2nd quarter, Exeter's close defensive unit of Tom Rubel, Dylan Cox, Jon Reed, and Alex Zani put tremendous pressure on the Tabor attack and forced turnovers and ineffective shots. Tabor kept it reasonably close with some forceful offense from one powerful midfielder, but Exeter's depth and athleticism wore the Seawolves down. Redmond and Petty each scored again in the 2nd quarter, and middie Chris Mottau had a beautiful goal on a great move from up top. Chris and Kirk Bansak were all over the field scooping up ground balls, playing great defense, and helping Bobby Goulding control faceoffs. With the halftime lead at 6-3, Exeter started the 3rd quarter a man-down from a late 2nd period penalty. Julian Rodier made a crucial save from right in front of the goal that kept the game from becoming 6-4. After trading goals to make it 7-4, Exeter scored five unanswered goals and put the game away when it became 12-4. During this run, Dylan Cox made a great coast-to-coast play off of a ground ball that resulted with his first goal of the season. To Tabor's credit, they continued to play hard during the final minutes and managed two more scores against the 2nd line defensive unit. Another positive note to this game was Exeter's man-down unit facing six penalty situations without giving up a goal.
