Exeter 7  St John's Prep 5
Mon, 4/12, Exeter - Exeter has handled St Johns Prep fairly easily in the past, so this tough close contest was somewhat of a surprise. SJP came out hard and tough on every ground ball, and challenged Exeter physically all over the field. This caught Exeter somewhat off guard and playing tentatively. Exeter fell behind 1-0 before SJP alumnus Tim Redmond scored two first quarter goals against his former teammates to put the Big Red on top 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. Exeter did not play well in the 2nd quarter as SJP continued their physical and aggressive play. Not only did Exeter not score despite many great opportunities, but three unanswered SJP goals gave them a 4-2 lead at halftime. After a little soul searching at the half, Exeter came out very strong for the 2nd half. Led by game ball winner Tom Rubel, the defense just swarmed all over SJP attackers and repeatedly caused turnovers. Tom, Alex Zani, Dylan Cox, Jon Reed, Brett Hughes, and Ian Drummond were relentless in their attack on the SJP offensive players. Tom not only stripped his man of the ball almost every time down the field, but he scooped up the loose ball and led the clear to move the ball to offense. These turnovers coupled with excellent riding by the attack started to produce results immediately in the 3rd quarter. Tom Petty scored a few minutes into the 3rd to narrow the SJP lead to one goal, and then Chris Davis scored off a Redmond assist to tie the game at the end of three periods of play. Their were many other great scoring opportunities created, but the SJP goalkeeper came up big several times. The 4th quarter continued where the 3rd left off. Exeter cranked up the pressure, and rookie Chris Mayer scored the go ahead goal on a nice feed from 4th quarter star Eric Horan. A few minutes after SJP scored to tie the game at 5-5 on one of their few legitimate opportunities of the 2nd half, Eric Horan isolated his man and scored unassisted to put Exeter on top for good with three minutes remaining. With just under two minutes remaining, Eric did it again off of a nice feed from Michael Scalise, and the game was sealed at the final score of 7-5. Although this was not a stellar team performance, it was nice to see Exeter come back so strong in the 2nd half against a very athletic and physical opponent that was clearly pumped up and playing well.
