Exeter 12  Portsmouth Abbey 9
Sat., 5/10, Exeter - Two undefeated teams clashed on this beautiful day and the Big Red of Exeter prevailed 12-9 over a feisty and well-coached opponent from Rhode Island. Exeter and Portsmouth Abbey traded two goals each to start the game. Subsequent first quarter goals by Chris Davis and Tom Petty gave Exeter a 4-2 edge temporarily, but Abbey responded with one more before the first period ended. Exeter scored two goals in the 2nd quarter while playing excellent defense and controlling the ball most of the period. After giving up a quick goal to start the 3rd period and narrow the lead to 6-4, Exeter reeled off five unanswered goals in a span of six minutes to take a commanding 11-4 lead. This was some of the best lacrosse of the season for Exeter, as we dominated play all over the field. Some substitutions started taking place for Exeter, but Abbey was not conceding anything at this point. To their credit, they continued to fight and hustle, and they managed four unanswered goals of their own to narrow the lead to 11-8 with four minutes still left to play. With just under three minutes remaining, Tim Redmond, high point man for the game with 3 goals and 3 assists, scored the 12th goal for Exeter on a nice feed from Eric Horan. This essentially sealed the victory, and Abbey's last goal with under a minute to play made the final score 12-9. The offense came mostly from the attack in this contest as each starting attackman scored three times. Exeter outshot Abbey at least 2 to 1, but great goalie play by their senior netminder kept the game from becoming a blowout. Game ball winner Eric Horan not only scored three and assisted once, but he was all over the field gobbling up ground balls, breaking up clears, and making big plays. Season high scorer Tom Petty (3g,1a) also had a big game. Bobby Goulding(1g,1a), Michael Scalise, and Adam Arsenault did a great job on faceoffs and controlling the ground balls. The team defense was a little disappointing, so there will be some work to do in practice as we continue to improve and become a more coordinated as a unit. This was a good performance, especially when a let down after the big Avon win on Wednesday could easily have been expected.
