Exeter 4  Pomfret 1
Wed, 4/14, Exeter - Led by game ball winner goalie Julian Rodier, Exeter's defensive unit completely dominated the Pomfret attack and limited their offensive output to a single 2nd quarter goal for the entire game. Large amounts of rain the previous 36 hours and a slight drizzle to start the game made field conditions difficult for both teams. Wet sticks and sliding feet were not conducive to crisp offensive play, but much of the credit for the 4-1 final score goes to the goalies and defensive units of both schools. Exeter's offense created lots of great shots throughout the game, but we were unable to hit the net until Bobby Goulding pumped home a hard outside shot off of a Tim Redmond assist five minutes into the 2nd quarter. With two minutes remaining before the half, a Pomfret middie was able to get off a quality shot for the only ball to sneak by Julian all day. For most of the game, the close defensive unit of Alex Zani, Tom Rubel, and Dylan Cox were not only dominating their respective attackmen, but they all did a great job of picking up tough ground balls and making good clearing decisions. Also playing great defense were long pole middies Jon Reed, Gus Davidson, Brett Hughes, and Ian Drummond. Several times the defense was able to create fast breaks. Dylan Cox started one of those breaks that resulted in Exeter's second goal on a Tim Redmond from Tom Petty classic score midway through the 3rd period. One minute later, middie Connor Seery took a nice feed from linemate Michael Scalise, and Exeter was ahead by two at 3-1. Bobby Goulding did a great job controlling faceoffs, and linemate Chris Davis picked up a few key grond balls coming in hard off the wing. Julian Rodier was called upon to make a few very tough 2nd half saves, and he turned away all of Pomfret's chances to get back into the game. He also did a great job of running out shots and battling for loose balls that did not go out of bounds because of the soaked field. Exeter's final tally came on a Sloan Smith rocket with just under three minutes to play. This was not a pretty win because of the tough field conditions, subsequent sloppy play, and some excellent goalie play for both teams. However, Exeter continues to show grit, determination, great defense, and the ability to create great offensive opportunities. All this bodes well as the Big Red looks ahead to some of their stiffest competition.
