Mon, 4/6, Exeter, NH - Exeter easily handled North Yarmouth Academy with a 9-2 victory on a very cold and windy day that made playing conditions difficult for everyone. Exeter's ball handling and execution was surprisingly sharp given the cold and wind, and the Big Red was able to run out to a quick 5-0 start after just one quarter. Game ball winner Tom Petty scored 2 goals and one assist in that quarter, and finished the day with 3 goals and 2 assists despite playing very little in the 2nd half. One of those assistes was a beautiful left-handed cut and convert from middie Bobby Goulding. Exeter substituted liberally starting in the 2nd quarter in order to give everyone a chance to play, stay warm, and to keep moving. The long pole brigade of Tom Rubel, Alex Zani, Dylan Cox, Jon Reed, Gus Davidson, Ian Drummond, and Brett Hughes were overwhelming in their coverage of the NYA offensive players. NYA tried to be patient and control the ball on offense, but Exeter's defense stripped them of the ball repeatedly. There was one lone Chris Davis goal in the 2nd quarter, so Exeter took a commanding 6-0 lead at halftime. Both teams were fairly frozen at the start of the 2nd half, yet to the players credit on both squads, everyone kept hustling and playing good lacrosse. Exeter continued with liberal substitution as starters received limited playing time. After NYA scored their first goal of the game a few minutes into the 3rd quarter, Michael Scalise responded with his 2nd goal of the game to keep the difference at six goals. Chris Davis scored his second goal of the game a couple of minutes later, and Exeter held an 8-1 lead going into the 4th. Exeter scored early in the 4th to make it 9-1, and then yielded a man-down goal with 30 seconds left in the game for the final score of 9-2. Chris Mottau played a very strong game all over the field, assisted on two goals, and unselfishly passed up an open net opportunity to a teammate.
