Exeter 12 Moses Brown 11
Sat, 4/17, Providence, RI - In a very exciting game that featured
very good offense on the part of both teams, Exeter came away with a 12-11
victory to notch their eighth win of the season without a defeat. Exeter's
game plan of shutting down the opposition's top two scoring middies worked
very well, but to Mo Brown's credit, their other offensive players stepped
up and found a way to score and keep the game close. Mo Brown scored first
early in the game. Exeter tied the score at 1-1 late in the quarter as leading
scorer Tom Petty (3g,3a) scored an unassisted goal from the left side.
Exeter scored the next two goals as Tom Petty and game
ball winner Michael Scalise (3goals) each found the net. This put
Exeter up 3-1, but Mo Brown came back to tie the game with only two minutes
until halftime. Bobby Goulding controlled the subsequent faceoff, and
Sloan Smith (3g,1a) scored the first of his hat trick off a nice assist
from linemate Chris Davis. Bobby dominated faceoffs all day,
and with less than a minute until halftime, he not only controlled the ball,
but also came down and scored Exeter's 5th goal off a Sloan Smith assist.
A last second penalty caused Exeter to start the 2nd half man-down, and Mo
Brown converted to make it a 5-4 game and take away some of the momentum Exeter
had accumulated. The game seesawed back and forth the rest of the 3rd quarter
with Exeter always ahead by one or in a tie. Sloan Smith, Tom Petty,
and Chris Davis scored Exeter's three 3rd quarter goals, and the period
ended 8-7. After Michael Scalise converted a nice feed from Tom
Petty, and Sloan Smith ripped an unassisted left-hander into the
lower corner, Exeter's 3-goal lead with less than six minutes remaining in
the final period looked reasonably comfortable. Although Mo Brown narrowed
the lead to 10-8, Eric Horan responded off a Tom Petty assist
to push the lead back to 11-8 with just four minutes to play. Once again Mo
Brown scored to narrow the margin to two, but a Michael Scalise rocket
off the pipe finished off his hat trick heroics and pushed the lead back to
12-9 with exactly two minutes to play. Exeter won the faceoff and controlled
the ball until a passing error turned it over in their offensive zone with
only 30 seconds remaining. Amazingly, Mo Brown threw the ball the length of
the field and managed to score off a loose ball scramble in front of the Exeter
goal with 11 seconds left in the game. Exeter fell asleep in the last 11 seconds
and let Mo Brown win the faceoff, run a fast break, and score their 11th goal
with just one second remaining. Although this game was not Exeter's usual
great defensive effort, the Big Red did what they needed to do to remain undefeated.
Long poles Tom Rubel, Jon Reed, Alex Zani, Gus Davidson, Brett Hughes,
and Ian Drummond took turns shutting down Mo Brown's top two scorers.
It is a good sign when the offense can come through when the defense is struggling,
and that is exactly what happened in this game. Click
