Exeter 13  Kennebunk HS 2
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, March 31st - On a raw and rainy last day of March on a late afternoon in New England, the Big Red opened their 2004 season with a very convincing 13-2 victory over Kennebunk HS. Despite the very cold temperatures, steady rain, and slick and muddy field conditions, Exeter played excellent lacrosse all over the field. It took almost half through the first quarter before Eric Horan (2g,1a) scored Exeter's first goal on a nice assist from game high scorer Tom Petty (4g,3a). This opened up the flood gates as Exeter tallied five more times before the end of the period to take a 6-1 lead going into the 2nd quarter. Exeter's long poles were dominating all over the field. Led by captain Tom Rubel, the defensive corps of Alex Zani, Jon Reed, Dylan Cox, Gus Davidson, Brett Hughes, and Ian Drummond had Kennebunk offensive players running for their lives. Goalie Julian Rodier thwarted the few legitimate shots on goal, and the middies moved the ball in transition with surprisingly good passing given the conditions. Newcomer Tim Redmond was awarded the game ball for coming through with a 4 goal, 1 assist effort in his very first game in an Exeter uniform. By the time Exeter had built a 10-1 half-time lead, Tim had already recorded three of his goals and his assist. The middies were mostly workhorses in transition and gobbling up loose balls as attackmen accounted for most of the Exeter scoring. Bobby Goulding, Michael Scalise (1g,1a), and Adam Arsenault dominated face-offs, and all three middie lines played equal shifts. The poor weather conditions and Exeter's reluctance to run up the score led to a low scoring 2nd half. The man-down unit was given plenty of practice in the 4th quarter because of some very questionable officiating calls against Exeter, and they only yielded one goal during several minutes of being a man short. All in all, it was a promising start to what promises to be a great season.
