Exeter 13 Governor Dummer 9
Mon, 5/10, Exeter - - Exeter defeated a very tough and athletic
GDA team that would not quit until the final whistle by the score of 13-9.
Incredible faceoff work by co-game
ball winner Bobby Goulding and excellent long pole play by wingmen
Dylan Cox, Brett Hughes, Ian Drummond, and Gus Davidson
allowed Exeter to control the ball off of most of the faceoffs. This was a
huge factor for Exeter's success on the day. GDA had a good defensive club
that matched up well with Exeter's high scoring attack, so middies took a
lot of the offensive initiative in the early part of the game. Sloan Smith
scored first on a left-handed blast into the corner, but other opportunities
were either saved by the GDA goalie or just barely missed. GDA tied the score
near the end of the quarter after a playing a patient ball control strategy
that worked well. The 2nd quarter was dominated by Exeter. The other game
ball winner, Kirk Bansak, scored the first goal of the quarter on
an isolation dodge, and the attack also got untracked as they put in three
more second quarter goals. Tim Redmond's unassisted goal was followed
by a nice unsettled goal by Tom Petty off a broken clear, and then
Tim scored again on a beautiful feed from Sloan Smith.
Exeter's 5-2 lead at the half became 6-3 after Eric Horan traded goals
with GDA's star midfielder, but then Exeter fell asleep for a three minutes
and allowed GDA to score three unanswered goals to tie the game at 6-6. Exeter
was clearly fired up about their poor play, and came out of a time out with
great spirit and determination. Kirk Bansak and Chris Mottau
were both playing inspiring short stick defense, gobbling up ground balls,
and clearing the ball effectively. The defense of Tom Rubel, Alex
Zani, Jon Reed, and Dylan Cox really tightened up and pressured
their men into some mistakes. On offense, Exeter responded with five unanswered
goals of their own to take a commanding 11-6 lead with 5 minutes to play in
the game. Leading the scoring outburst was Eric Horan, Michael Scalise,
and Sloan Smith. Eric scored all four of his game high 4 goals
in the 3rd and 4th quarter. Michael scored twice in the 2nd half, and
Sloan also scored twice in the 2nd half to give him a 3 goal, 1 assist
afternoon. It was a nice balanced offensive effort for Exeter with 7 goals
from the attack, and 6 goals from the midfield. Exeter pushed their lead to
13-7 with less than three minutes to play, but GDA kept battling hard, and
was able to score twice in the last two minutes to make it a 13-9 final score.
This was a nice win against a quality team that came into the game with an
8-4 record, and whose losses were only against very good teams.
