Exeter 4  Deerfield 12
Saturday, May 15th - Exeter, NH -
Two of the best prep school lacrosse teams in New England met today, but Deerfield was able to get off to a very quick start and never look back against a sluggish looking Exeter team. Deerfield was fast, athletic, and skilled, and they played extremely well as they jumped all over Exeter on their way to a 6-2 first quarter lead. Despite Bobby Goulding's great faceoff effort, Exeter could not come up with a ground ball and get to a settled offense. Deerfield scored on settled offense, in transition, and they also took advantage of two Exeter first quarter penalties to score twice in man-up situations. Exeter's Tom Petty scored unassisted, and Tim Redmond scored off of a nice Michael Scalise assist, but the first half highlights were few and far between for the BIG RED. After giving up two quick second quarter goals and falling behind 8-2, Exeter finally settled down and started playing better. Julian Rodier was heroic between the pipes as Exeter held Deerfield scoreless from the 9-minute mark of the 2nd quarter to half way through the 3rd period. This 15-minute drought for Deerfield gave Exeter a chance to try and climb back into the game, but the offense was only able to manufacture one Tim Redmond goal against a tough and tenacious GREEN defense. Deerfield managed to score twice in the remaining minutes of the 3rd quarter after two of Exeter's TEN penalties. Tim Redmond scored his third and Exeter's last goal of the game to make it a 10-4 game after three quarters of play, but it would never get any closer. The better team won, and unfortunately Exeter did not play the high quality lacrosse they have been exhibiting most of this season. There are two important and tough games remaining for Exeter to rebound and show their true colors.
