Exeter 8  Avon Old Farms 4
Wed., 4/7 Exeter, NH - - On the first really nice sunny day of this Spring, the Exeter Big Red played an almost flawless second half on their way to an impressive 8-4 victory over a very good Avon Old Farms team. Exeter played somewhat nervously during much of the first quarter and found themselves losing 2-0 after those first 12 minutes of play. The high goal scorer of the day Tom Petty (3g,1a) was assisted by Tim Redmond (1g,4a) on a man-up goal early into the 2nd quarter, and Exeter really settled down and starting playing much better after breaking the ice. Although Avon responded to go back up by 2 goals again, Chris Mottau quickly brought Exeter back to within one goal just a few minutes later. Exeter and Avon traded goals at the four-minute mark, and the 4-3 Avon lead would stay as the halftime score. Exeter came out and played their best lacrosse of the season the entire second half. The defense, led by goalie Julian Rodier shut down the Avon offense completely. Exeter was clicking on every phase of their game. Clearing, riding, defense, and offense were all running on all cylinders. The 3rd quarter featured four unanswered goals by Exeter from four different scorers. Tom Petty, Tim Redmond, Connor Seery, and Chris Mayer (first career goal) all found the net as Exeter took a solid 7-4 lead into the 4th quarter. Exeter played smart, ball-control lacrosse for the 4th quarter, and continued their stifling defense. Sloan Smith essentially put the game away when he scored Exeter's 8th goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game. There were many potential game ball performances in this game. Tom Petty and Tim Redmond led the offense. Julian was great in the nets. Bobby Goulding dominated faceoffs. All the long poles were terrific and played extremely well. Given the quality of play, the coaches have chosen to award two game balls. For playing super lacrosse all over the field, his great defense and ground ball work, being the man-down short stick, and also an offensive impact player, Chris Mottau is a game ball winner. While all of the close defense of Tom Rubel, Dylan Cox, and Alex Zani played great lacrosse, the coaches felt Dylan had an exceptional day and deserves game ball recognition. He shut down his man, was huge on all ground ball situations, and he made several great clears. Congratulations to the team on a very well played game.
