Exeter 11 Tabor Academy 4
Sat, 5/3 Tabor Academy - Led by an overwhelming defense, the
BIG RED played its most complete game of the season as they defeated the Seawolves
of Tabor by the score of 11-4. Although the entire defensive unit played inspired
lacrosse, game ball recognition goes
to Will Tuttle. Will's assignment was Tabor's offensive star attackman,
and he shut him down completely. Will and his defensive mates Wiley
Dornseif and Stew Stout caused many turnovers, intercepted long
passes, gobbled up ground balls, and did a great job of clearing the ball
to the offense. The offense was led by Tom Petty(3g, 3a), Mike Hines(2g,
3a), and Sloan Smith(2g, 1a). Tom and Mike either assisted
or scored on nine of Exeter's eleven goals. An important statistic that indicates
how well the offense moved the ball in this game is that ten of Exeter's eleven
goals were assisted. Exeter struck first five minutes into the game, and never
relinquished the lead as they went ahead 3-1 at the quarter and 5-3 at the
half. Two of Tabor's three goals were scored when they had gained a man advantage
situation on an Exeter penalty. Otherwise, the defense limited Tabor's offensive
opportunities, and goalie Julian Rodier(8 saves) came up big with a
key save when needed. The midfield units did a nice job between the restraining
lines on ground balls and kept tremendous pressure on Tabor. Exeter came out
and scored three unanswered 3rd quarter goals to take a commanding 8-3 lead
with just one period to play. Although Tabor would score the first goal of
the 4th quarter on another man-up situation, their hopes of a comeback were
quickly squelched when captain Gavin Nurick scored off a Tom Petty
feed to increase the lead back to five. Senior John Rollo finished
out the Exeter scoring with two nice goals within a minute of each other,
and Exeter just held the ball the remainder of the game. This was a very solid
performance by Exeter, and a well earned victory against a tough opponent.
