Exeter 12 Moses Brown School 7
Sat, 4/19 Tufts University - The game
ball winning senior midfield line of James
Montalvo, Taylor Evans, and co-captain
Suresh Jones fueled a furious 4th
quarter offensive barrage of six unanswered goals that led Exeter to a hard
fought 12-7 win over Moses Brown. This was a game that started great for the
BIG RED as they reeled off four goals to begin the game and take a 4-0 lead
with less than three minutes to play in the 1st quarter. A Moses Brown middie
unassisted goal followed by a man-advantage goal made the game 4-2 after the
first quarter, and brought renewed confidence and energy to Moses Brown. Exeter
was dominating the ball and possession, but similar to the NYA game on Wednesday,
Exeter shooters were being thwarted by great goalie play by the opposition.
Although significantly outshot in the 2nd quarter, Moses Brown managed to
outscore Exeter 3-1 and tie the score 5-5 at the half. Exeter played with
even more intensity in the 3rd quarter as the defense of Wiley Dornseif,
Stew Stout, Will Tuttle, Jon Reed and Tom Rubel put tremendous
pressure on the Moses Brown attack and kept giving the Exeter offense opportunities
to score. However, the Moses Brown goalie and defense held Exeter to just
one Tom Petty 3rd quarter solo score while their offense squeezed out
two of their own. The Exeter senior middies took over in the 4th quarter when
Taylor Evans scored consecutively on a hard lefty bounce shot, and
then followed 40 seconds later with a rocket to the upper corner. This gave
Exeter a lead they would not relinquish. Captain Gavin Nurick enabled
the Exeter momentum to build by winning every single 4th quarter face-off,
most of them single handedly. At the other end of the field, rookie goalie
Eric Hassett made four key saves and cleared the ball flawlessly to
keep Exeter on offense. After Ryan Beer scored his 2nd goal of the
game at the 7-minute mark, Suresh Jones assisted middie linemate James
Montalvo for his 2nd goal of the day to give Exeter a 10-7 advantage.
Suresh then scored unassisted 15 seconds later, and the game was essentially
over with less than four minutes to play. Exeter's twelfth goal was scored
by attackman John Rollo. Moses Brown attempted to extend pressure only
to have John successfully dodge his man and convert. This game was
significant for Exeter because of the great offensive punch delivered by the
Exeter middies. Although the attack of Mike Hines (1/1), Sloan Smith
(2/0), Tom Petty (1/0), and John Rollo (1/0) played well,
there was more scoring balance between attack and midfield then in previous
games this season. This bodes well for the future. See
