Exeter 18  Kennebunk HS 7
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, April 2nd - On a cold and rainy evening under the lights, the Exeter lacrosse team easily won their first game against Kennebunk HS by the score of 18-7. It was a game dominated by the Exeter attack as they accounted for 14 of Exeter's 18 goals. Although there were several candidates for the award, the game ball went to Sloan Smith (4 goals, 1 assist) for overall great play that included two key interceptions that he converted into unassisted goals. Other outstanding performances were turned in by Mike Hines (4 goals, 1 assist), Tom Petty (3 goals, 4 assists), and dominant face-off middie Gavin Nurick (1 goal, 1 assist). The other scorers for Exeter with one goal each were Taylor Evans, Chris Mottau, John Rollo, Eric Horan, and Michael Scalise.

Exeter jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, and made it 5-0 on the first of Sloan's interceptions on the ride. However, Kennebunk continued to work hard and would not let Exeter pull completely away. Good Kennebunk play coupled with some Exeter mistakes and penalties allowed the opposition to come as close as 6-4 with one minute remaining until the half. A Tom Petty goal off a Taylor Evan's assist just before the half made the midway score 7-4. Exeter came out strong by scoring four unanswered goals to open the 2nd half with Mike Hines leading the way. Mike scored or assisted on three of Exeter's four goals in that streak as the Big Red jumped out to a commanding 10-4 lead. Liberal substitution took place for much of the 3rd and 4th quarters, yet Exeter continued to play strong in the deteriorating playing conditions. The defense of Wiley Dornseif, Will Tuttle, Stew Stout, and long pole Tom Rubel played extremely well given the sloppy footing and our limited practice time in coordinating defensive slides. Goalie Julian Rodier now has his first varsity win under his belt, and did a nice job between the pipes.
