Wed, 5/7, KUA - Fueled by the tremendous faceoff success of Bobby Goulding, and a 3 goal/1 assist quarter by attackman John Rollo, the Exeter BIG RED exploded for seven 3rd quarter goals to essentially put away Kimball Union Academy for the day. For their outstanding play, particularly in the 2nd half, Bobby and John share the game ball award for the game. Mike Hines scoring twice early helped Exeter jump to a 4-1 lead as of midway through the 2nd quarter, but a couple of defensive mistakes and a man-down goal allowed KUA back into the game. Exeter came out strong in the 3rd quarter to score four unanswered goals in the first four minutes. Exeter was dominating all phases of the game including defense, groundballs, transition, and offense. Goalie Julian Rodier had his best game in terms of making excellent clearing passes to breaking middies, and the defense of Will Tuttle, Stew Stout, Wiley Dornseif, John Reed, and Tom Rubel was smothering a very good KUA attack. Not only did John Rollo explode for 3 goals and 2 assists for the offense, but he was joined by Tom Petty (3/2), Sloan Smith (2/2), Eric Horan (3/0), and Mike Hines (2/1) in Exeter's best offensive show of the season. This game also featured Bobby Goulding's first goal of the season, and lower Kirk Bansak's first goal of his career. KUA came into this game with an 8-1 record that included a one-goal loss to a strong Holderness team. Exeter was able to force KUA out of their game plan and to take control of each phase of the contest. When KUA scored two quick goals midway through the 3rd quarter to narrow the lead to 8-5, Exeter immediately gained the momentum back by reeling off six straight goals of their own to end all KUA hopes. Liberal substitution occurred for most of the 4th quarter, and Curtis Fontaine, Gus Davidson, Alex Silverman, and Connor Seery all played well. It was a nice win for Exeter as we head into a very tough stretch in our season.
