Exeter 11  Cushing Academy 6
Fri, 4/25, Exeter, NH - Led by game ball winner Gavin Nurick, Exeter played a very strong second half to produce an 11-6 victory over a scrappy and athletic Cushing team. Gavin's 2nd half heroics included grabbing almost every face-off single handedly, scoring once, and assisting on three other goals. Like last year, Exeter came out somewhat flat for a Friday game. Cushing hustled after everything in the first half, showed true patience when they possessed the ball on offense, and their effort paid off with a few goals. Exeter played a less than impressive first half both offensively and defensively, and was just not firing on all cylinders. A 3-3 halftime tie became a 6-5 Exeter lead by the end of the 3rd quarter, but the play was already swinging heavily in favor of the BIG RED. The 4th quarter was similar to the 4th quarter against Moses Brown last Saturday in that Exeter dominated play and started converting shot opportunities that were missed earlier. A 5-1 fourth quarter sealed Cushing's fate. Other offensive standouts for Exeter included Eric Horan with another fine 3-goal performance, Mike Hines (2/1) who was another catalyst for Exeter's 2nd half surge, Sloan Smith (2/0), Suresh Jones (1/1) and Tom Petty (1/1). In the first half, the defense tried to play a little too much take-away lacrosse against a quick Cushing attack , but they eventually settled down nicely and played extremely well as usual. The coaches realize that a Friday game is tough both mentally and physically, so a less than stellar first half is very understandable. Click here to see game pictures.
