Exeter 7  Andover 8
Saturday, May 24th - Exeter, NH - Exeter could not convert on several shots in the last minute of play while enjoying a man advantage, and thus suffered their first loss against Andover in the last five years. This was a defensive battle for the most part, as neither the Exeter nor the Andover offense could get untracked against very effective defenses. After Eric Horan scored on a last second first quarter "Gilman pass" from Stew Stout to tie the game at 2-2, it looked like Exeter was jump started from a slow beginning. Exeter played well in the 2nd quarter and took a 5-4 halftime lead on goals by Mike Hines, Taylor Evans, and Tom Petty. Wiley Dornseif was neutralizing Andover's star offensive player with great defense, and his long pole colleagues Will Tuttle, Stew Stout, and Tom Rubel were also playing extremely well. Unfortunately, Exeter's ineffective shooting in their man-up offense was taking its toll. Not only did the man-up team score only once in their eight opportunities, but they also allowed Andover to score two man-down goals while enjoying the advantage. Exeter managed to stay out of the penalty box most of the game, but a slashing penalty with six minutes left in the 4th quarter and the score tied at 7-7 gave Andover only their 3rd man -up opportunity of the game. Andover converted on this man advantage for what was ultimately the game-winning goal. Goalie Julian Rodier played extremely well with 13 saves in the game, and Eric Horan was the offensive star with a three-goal performance. It was the fourth one goal loss for the Big Red this season, with two of those four in sudden death. Exeter now holds a 36-32-1 overall record against Andover in one of the oldest prep school rivalries that started in 1935.
