Exeter 14  Yarmouth HS 10
Exeter defeated a scrappy and hustling Yarmouth High School team by a surprisingly close margin of 14-10. Every time Exeter pulled away and started to heavily substitute, Yarmouth would make a small run to force the first string back into the game. Playing back to back games is never easy mentally or physically, and this showed in Exeter's less than stellar play at both ends of the field. Nevertheless, the Big Red did what needed to be done to stay undefeated at 7-0. As always, the offense was led by the attack of Alan Eberstein (4 goals, 3 assists), Colin Thune (2 goals, 2 assists), Casey D'Annolfo (4 goals), and Ryan Voccola (2 goals, 1 assist). With prep attackman Tom Petty's goal as well, this means the attack scored 13 of the 14 goals, and assisted the 14th. Exeter is going to need more offensive production from the middies when the games become even more competitive. The game started off well with Exeter jumping to a 3-0 lead in the 1st quarter, and then scoring the first goal just seconds into the 2nd quarter. Visions of a rout were then dashed as Yarmouth managed to score 3 goals in the 2nd period to make the halftime score 6-3 Exeter. Game ball winner Alan Eberstein took over the game during the 3rd period. In this six-goal outburst by Exeter, Alan scored twice, and assisted on three others. The score was now 12-4 at the end of the 3rd quarter, and very liberal substitution ensued. To Yarmouth's credit, they took it to the Exeter 2nd string and gained the momentum. Yarmouth pumped in four unanswered goals to make the game 12-8 with five minutes to play. Exeter inserted some starters, and Casey D'Annolfo immediately pumped in two quick goals to move the margin back to 6 goals. Yarmouth fought to the end by scoring another two goals, and thus the final score of 14-10. The defense can certainly play better, including midfield defense. This will be an area of concentration as we get ready for the next game.
