Exeter 10 Holderness 11
With 1:54 left in regulation, a Holderness attackman
scored the go ahead goal to bring his team an 11-10 comeback victory. This
was a game featuring two of the top teams in eastern New England, and it was
a rough and intense contest all the way. Holderness started strong, managed
to control the ball and the tempo for the entire first quarter, and went out
to a 4-1 lead. The 4th first quarter goal coming with 1 second left in the
quarter. Exeter, led by All-American Alan Eberstein (5 goals, 3 assists)
and senior all-star Peter Monroe (3 goals, 1 assist), dominated play
in the 2nd and 3rd periods. During this period of time, Exeter outscored Holderness
by a 4 goal margin to take an 8-7 lead into the 4th quarter. When Eberstein
scored his 5th goal of the game early in the final period, it looked like
the Big Red's 2-goal margin would be safe. Both Exeter and Holderness scored
once in the next few minutes, so with 7 minutes to go in the contest, Exeter
still maintained a 2-goal lead and good momentum. However, Exeter mistakes
handling the ball proved the difference. Repeated failures to clear the ball
from their own defensive end in the final minutes of the game gave Holderness
additional opportunities to score. Holderness tied the game at the 4 minute
mark, and went ahead at just under 2 minutes to play. Exeter continued to
hustle and work hard, as they had all day, but last minute shots did not find
their mark. Jeff Miller made an impressive 15 saves in the goal, and
Colin Thune also had a very good day with a 3 assist effort.
