Exeter 5 Deerfield 11
In the midst of rain, sleet and snow the lacrosse game
between two of New Englands best lacrosse teams went on. The field conditions
were sloppy, as was the play at times. The two squads did show their excellence
during several junctures of the game. Both teams featured high quality offenses
and excellent defenses. The game was much closer than the final six-goal margin
of victory. In the words of Chip Davis, the Deerfield coach, Exeter played
very well especially goalie Jeff Miller who ended up with a dozen saves.
The Deerfield defense, which was the most talented group the PEA has seen
all year, matched up very well against our attack. The slow down offense was
run very well as we managed to create many opportunities to score. The Deerfield
goalie came up big as well as us hitting the pipe on more than a few occasions.
The halftime score of 6-3 Deerfield was indicative of how well the half was
played. Deerfield needed a score with 4 seconds left in the half to give the
visitors a three-goal cushion at the break. The second half was well played
and Exeter played their best quarter of the game in the 3rd. Hustle by the
middies, great defense by the whole team, and excellent ball control offense
kept Deerfield within reach. However it was not to be when after a pipe and
a disallowed goal by the Big Red, Deerfield put one in. Wiith less than five
minutes to play in the game, we extended our defensive pressure in an attempt
to regain possession of the ball. This created some scoring chances but we
went after them in an attempt to win not just to keep it close. Hats off to
Deerfield, as they are a great team. Hats off to Exeter as we are a great
team as well.
