Exeter 15 Andover 10
Andover, MA - Exeter defeated Andover for the
4th year in a row by the convincing score of 15-10 and notched the team's
school record 16th victory of the season. Led by game
ball winner Gavin Nurick (2 goals, 2 assists), offensive
stars Casey D'Annolfo (5 goals, 3 assists) and Peter Monroe
(4 goals, 1 assist), and defensive standouts Seth Coburn and goalie
Jeff Miller (14 saves), the Big Red dominated the Blue after a slow
first quarter. Once the jitters were over after the 1st quarter, Exeter reeled
off 5 unanswered goals to take a commanding 7-2 halftime lead. Andover made
an attempt at a comeback in the 3rd quarter when they narrowed the lead to
8-5. After trading goals to start the 4th, Exeter scored 6 unanswered goals
in a span of 4 minutes to make it a 15-7 contest with 5 minutes remaining
in the game. Liberal substitutions ensued, and Andover scored 3 meanigless
goals in the last few minutes to make it a 15-10 final. Seth Coburn
manhandled Andover's star attackman most of the game and held him without
a goal or an assist. Not until Seth was subbed out in the 4th quarter
did Andover's star score his first goal. Peter Monroe picked up where
he left off last year when he won the Andover game ball. His two 1st quarter
goals amounted to the only Exeter offensive production of the quarter, and
he was all over the field gobbling up ground balls. Gavin Nurick was
key to settling the offense down as he took his short stick defender behind
the goal and directed traffic. He also helped kill Andover's attempts at zone
defense with his effective cuts that led to his 2 goals. Casey owed
Andover a little something from the football loss in the Fall, and he sure
came through big time. His 5 goal, 3 point effort is among the most productive
offensive performances in the long history of this great rivalry. While Andover
concentrated their defensive efforts on stopping Exeter's offensive leader
Alan Eberstein, they witnessed Exeter's ability to score from his teammates.
Despite their concentrated efforts to shut down Alan, he managed to
still score 2 goals and assist twice to finish up the 2nd most productive
offensive season in Exeter history. Alan's
67 goals and 34 assists make him only the 2nd player to ever break the 100
point barrier, and places him 4th on Exeter's all-time scoring list.
He had an incredible year. Meanwhile, Jeff Miller effectively shut
down the Blue whenever they penetrated the defense of Coburn, Ben
Gage, Matt Perdoni, Tom Rubel, and long pole . It
was a great win, and it marks the first time since 1956 that Exeter has won
four straight games against Andover. Four year players Ryan Voccola
and Peter Monroe along with all the other seniors finish their careers
having never lost a lacrosse game to Andover. Congratulations.
