Exeter 7 Navy Prep 11
This was a game of two very different halves of lacrosse. The first
half consisted of Navy Prep taking advantage of every single mistake Exeter
made on the field. While Exeter had difficulty adjusting initially to the
size and strength of some of the Navy players, it was clear even in the lopsided
first half that Exeter could create offensive opportunities. A very good Navy
goalkeeper thwarted several Exeter first half point blank shots, and a pipe
shot and a save by a Navy defenseman with the goalie out of the net added
to the Exeter frustration. Meanwhile, Navy was very opportunistic with loose
balls in the crease area, backing up missed shots and finding open players
on the crease, and taking advantage of a few transition situations. Goalie
Brian Anand played an outstanding game and saved several shots from close
range that would have made the first half even worse. When the second half
started with Exeter up a man, Andrew Sung continued his great play by grabbing
the man-up face-off so Exeter could set up their man-up offense. Twenty one
seconds later, Andrew ripped home a high hard shot to start the Exeter 2nd
half comeback. Andrew's goal was followed one minute later by an Alan Eberstein
goal from a Joaquin Walker assist . After Navy's only 3rd quarter goal, Jared
Connell scored on a solo dodge to make the score 8-4. Eberstein brought Exeter
to within three goals with his 2nd goal of the game near the end of the 3rd
period. While the offense was coming alive, the defense was playing superb
aggressive lacrosse. Long stick middie Pat Sullivan played an incredible game.
He repeatedly stripped Navy midfielders from the ball and caused turnovers
all over the field. Greg Donohue and Adam White were both dominating their
attackmen and clearing the ball well. Exeter put incredible pressure on the
Navy goal, but could not get another one by their hot goaltender in the 3rd
quarter. When Navy scored first in the 4th quarter, Exeter could easily have
quit on such a hot (93) day. However, the Big Red kept working hard. Andrew
Dodwell scored two goals down the stretch to keep the pressure on, but it
was not enough. Navy was able to keep their lead as Exeter continued to apply
pressure all over the field. Although this game goes into the loss column,
the coaches were extremely pleased with the team's effort and their ability
to come back against a very good team. If they play as hard and as well in
the remainder of the season, they will win a lot of lacrosse games.
