Exeter 6 KUA 2
Exeter traveled to Meriden, NH to take on an undefeated KUA team on
their home field. The game lived up to expectations as two talented defensive
squads kept both offensive teams off balance for much of the game. KUA came
out very aggressively in the first quarter and was rewarded with a 1-0 lead
after one period of action. Soon after KUA increased their lead to 2-0, Colin
Thune repeated his heroics from Tabor last Saturday by jump-starting the Exeter
offense in the 2nd quarter. In succession, Colin scored off a very nice dodge
and feed from Jared Connell, then he assisted a Joaquin Walker goal, and then
scored on a solo dodge immediately afterwards. Exeter took this 3-2 lead into
halftime, and the defense just kept getting stronger and more dominating as
the game wore on. In addition to the usual excellent long stick play by Greg
Donohue, Adam White, Ben Courchesne, Chris Lawrence, and Pat Sullivan, the
short stick middie defense was also superb. Game ball winner Joaquin Walker
not only scored two important goals, but played great defense, and gobbled
up ground balls like a vacuum cleaner. Andrew Sung dominated the faceoffs
to help Exeter completely control the ball most of the 2nd half. Although
Exeter was held scoreless in the 3rd period, it was not because good shots
were not being generated. Between Exeter playing without their high scorer
Alan Eberstein, and the KUA goalie played a superb game, the score was kept
close heading into the 4th quarter. Goals by Walker, Matt Stolpinski, and
Gavin Nurick put the game away by half way through the final period. The play
of the day was Matt's incredible deception to make his shot look like a pass.
It was too much for even KUA's high quality goalkeeper.
