Exeter 11 Governor Dummer 8
Wednesday, May 16th - In a game marred by poor officiating and
over 20 total penalties assessed to the two teams, Exeter came away with a
hard fought victory. The poor officiating kept both teams off balance and
interrupted any semblance of flow to the game. This was unfortunate, because
both teams are good, both teams were hustling, and the players deserved better.
GDA struck first on a goal by their star midfielder who finished the day with
3 goals and 2 assists for the home team. Joaquin Walker answered with Exeter's
first goal a short time later to knot the score. After GDA scored again to
take a 2-1 lead into the 2nd quarter, Exeter reeled off 3 unanswered goals.
Walker scored and assisted to Gavin Nurick, and Andrew Sung also scored and
assisted Joaquin's goal. GDA scored on one of their many man-up opportunities
to narrow the lead to 4-3, and then knotted the score at 4-4 just before the
half. Despite giving up 4 goals in the half, Exeter's defensive game plan
was being executed perfectly by defensemen Greg Donohue and Adam White. Greg
completely neutralized GDA's star attackman Taylor Brown who is an ISL all-star
and a top scorer in the league. Greg shut him off from even handling the ball
most of the time, and when he did get the ball, Greg prevented Taylor from
generating a quality shot. Taylor finished the game with 0 goals and 0 assists.
Adam White played equally effectively on GDA's other carry attackman, so most
of the burden was placed on their middies. Without giving up so many man-down
penalties, Exeter would surely have kept GDA under 6 goals. A big reason for
this was game ball winner goalie Brian Anand.
After a somewhat shaky start, Brian settled down and played a great game.
He made 9 saves on the day, forced misses with great position on several other
shots, and did a nice job clearing the ball. Exeter took the lead for good
in the 3rd quarter when Ben Harris scored twice and Jared Connell scored once.
GDA kept it close until Exeter opened up a 3-goal lead with about 5 minutes
remaining. They made it 10-8 with 2 minutes to go, but Exeter's man-down defense
held firm while two men down for the last two minutes of the game.
