Exeter 7  Holderness 5

Two of the top prep school lacrosse teams in Eastern New England clashed today with Exeter winning a hard fought contest 7-5. Holderness' record was 12-0 prior to this game, with big wins over Andover, NMH, St. Paul's, and Pinkerton Academy. Holderness played a very rough and physical game that helped them jump ahead to a 2-0 lead after only three minutes of the first quarter. However, Exeter bounced right back to tie the score behind a Michael Saraceni goal from Ryan Glennon, and a Damien Chaviano goal on a Saraceni assist. Exeter shut down the Holderness offense the remainder of the first half behind the outstanding play of Greg Donohue, and his fellow defenseman Ben Courchesne and Will Gilmore. Brian Anand was steady in the goal and directed the clear to perfection. The second quarter belonged to Exeter due to Holderness penalties and good solid play. Glennon and Walker each scored to give Exeter a 4-2 halftime lead. The midfield play of Glennon, Joaquin Walker, Dave Seger, and Andrew Sung was excellent. Andrew Sung was a monster on face-offs, and all the middies were tough on defense and groundballs. Andrew Dodwell switched to a long stick due to a Nick Crawford injury, and did an excellent job. When Exeter scored the first goal of the 2nd half to take a 5-2 lead, the potential was there for Exeter to put the game away. However, great goalie play by Holderness, and continued hustle on their part led to three consecutive Holderness goals to tie the score at 5-5 going into the 4th period. Exeter won the 4th quarter by dominating the ball. Exeter scored twice to go up by 7-5, and then controlled the ball to keep Holderness from mounting a comeback. It was a great game that both teams can be proud of the way they played. Two game balls were awarded. A game ball to offensive hero Michael Saraceni who scored 3 goals and had 3 assists. The other game ball to defensive star Greg Donohue who excelled at close defense, ground balls, and clearing the ball up the field.
