Exeter 3 Deerfield 11
Two of the top lacrosse teams in New England clashed today, but Deerfield used an aggressive defense, excellent goalie play, and a versatile attack to defeat Exeter 11-3. The game was a tight 2-1 contest for most of the first quarter until Deerfield's start attackman scored twice with only 20 and 5 seconds remaining in the quarter to take a 4-1 advantage. Exeter's goal came on a Nick Crawford assist to Ryan Voccola on a fast break. Despite the two unfortunate goals at the end of the quarter, and Deerfield shutting down Exeter's top scorers, the Big Red managed to play Deerfield even at one goal each for the 2nd quarter. Brian Anand played well in the goal, and Rob Bateman scored the Exeter goal on a nice sweep. Exeter answered Deerfield's early 3rd quarter goal on a man-up goal by Andrew Sung assisted by Colin Thune. With three minutes left in the 3rd quarter, it was a 6-3 contest and Exeter had a few good opportunities to close the gap even more. However, Deerfield made it 7-3 before the 3rd quarter ended, and put the game away by scoring the first quarter of the 4th. Deerfield managed to stop Exeter's top scorers without any goals or assists, so that was the real story of the game.
