Norman Hatch was born in New York in 1899, and came to Exeter as an Instructor in Latin in 1923. He will always be remembered for the great "L"'s in his life of Latin and Lacrosse. Having lettered in lacrosse at Harvard in 1921, "Hatchie" brought lacrosse to the Academy informally in 1933. In 1935, he coached the first Exeter lacrosse team, and will forever be remembered as the "Father of Exeter Lacrosse". Hatchie remained the head varsity coach for three seasons before taking a sabbatical year in England in 1937-38. When he returned to the Academy, he coached at the club level in order to train the players who would eventually play for the varsity. This system of using the club lacrosse program as the training ground for future varsity players remained in effect throughout the 1940's and 1950's.
Hatchie returned to coach at the varsity level in 1943 with Bob Kesler, but he happily returned to his work with the club program afer the 1948 season. Hatchie retired from the Academy in 1963 after 40 years of service, and he passed away on December 14th, 1979 at the age of 80.
