Jim was born in Portchester, NY on November 16th, 1931. Jim learned much of his lacrosse during his years at Deerfield Academy, and he continued his playing career at Hobart College in Geneva, NY. Jim went on to earn a graduate degree from the Bread Loaf School of Middlebury College, and also his J.D degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. After teaching at the Holderness School and the Barlow School, Jim was appointed to the English department starting in the Fall of 1973. Jim immediately took over the lacrosse program upon his arrival, and he earned the respect and friendship of all his players during his five-year tenure in that position. Exeter struggled and worked hard to regain the prominence of their teams from an earlier era, but it was not to be. The interest in lacrosse was spreading like wildfire, and there was plenty of tough competition from other prep schools as well as college jv teams which were still on Exeter's schedule. Andover lacrosse was on a roll, and Exeter was unable to defeat Andover during Jim's five-year tenure as head coach. Although Jim's cumulative record was a disappointing 30-37, he finished his Exeter head-coaching career in 1978 with a winning 8-6 record that included shutouts of Governor Dummer and St. Pauls. Jim also coached goalie Bob Bennett during his years at Exeter, and was significant in helping Bob become Exeter's first high school All-American. (This official designation of high school All-American did not begin until 1971.) Jim left Exeter to go back to the Holderness School in an administrative capacity. Despite the demands of his new administrative position, Jim continued to coach lacrosse at Holderness in the girls lacrosse program. Although Jim currently needs a wheelchair for getting around, he never misses the annual Exeter vs Holderness lacrosse double-header that features the girls game preceding the boys game. He can always be spotted on the sidelines with a huge smile on his face as he watches the two teams he once coached.
