Al was born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts on July 7th, 1934. After graduating from Cushing Academy, Al earned his B.S from Springfield College in 1959, and his M.Ed from Ithaca College in 1962. After teaching and coaching at the high school level as well as at Upsala and Ithaca colleges, Al was appointed to the Department of Physical Education in 1969 as the head varsity football coach. In addition to his teaching and football duties, Al became involved in learning about lacrosse at the club level. Although he never played lacrosse himself, Al knew how to coach and to elicit the best from his players. After assisting Ted Seabrooke for the 1972 season in which the team struggled to a 2-11 record, Al took over as head coach for the one year of 1973. He managed a very respectable 9-5 record. Al gladly turned the program over to the more experienced Jim Brewer when Jim was appointed to the English Department for the 1973-1974 school year. Al remained active in the club lacrosse program for many years after stepping down from coaching at the varsity level. Al was appointed Director of Summer Athletics in 1978, and he held that position until his retirement in 2000. Tragically, Al passed away on December 6th, 2002 after a lengthy illness.
