Although there have been many great lacrosse players at Exeter who went on to become college All-Americans, Stewart Lindsay is generally considered the greatest Exeter lacrosse player of them all. He came to Exeter as a 10th grader and played three years of varsity lacrosse under the coaching leadership of Bob Kessler in 1950 and 1951, and then Alan Vrooman in 1952. By the time Stew graduated, he had set every scoring record in existance, and his career total of 100 goals would not be equaled until more than 35 years later. When one considers that Stew's scoring totals were based on a total of 29 career games played, his goals per game average far surpasses any of the modern players on the current scoring leader list. When Stew matriculated to Syracuse University, he also broke all of their scoring records, went on to become a 3-time All-American, and he played in the 1956 North-South All-Star game. After college, Stew continued his love of the game by playing for many years for the Connecticut Valley Lacrosse Club, starting the lacrosse program at Cheshire Academy, and coaching for many years at the Kingswood-Oxford School. In 1976, Stew attained the highest honor possible when he was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. |
