Matt came to Exeter as a repeat upper from a struggling program at Lawrence Academy where he was already established as their best defenseman. Matt became an immediate starter and key player his first year as he teamed with classmate and fellow All-American Sam Gardner '09 and PG Sam Johnson '08 to form one of the top close defenses in all of New England that allowed only 6 goals per game. Matt helped lead Exeter to a 13-4 record that year that included his game-ball winning performance against Pingree School. As a captain in his senior year of 2009, Matt was called upon to lead the defense when Sam Gardner had to miss most of the season due to an injury. Matt was more than up to the task as he took on the responsibility of tackling the oppositions top player every game and leading a defense that allowed only 89 goals in 16 games for a 5.5 goals against average. Only two teams scored in double digits and Matt was again honored with a game ball for his outstanding performance against in a 9-6 win over Bridgton Academy. Matt was selected to play in the prestigious East-West Senior All-Star game after the season. Matt was a heavily recruited player for the next level and decided early on to continue his career at DI Fairfield University.
